FTCC test notes

Post  Displacedrace on Wed Jul 28, 2010 12:43 pm

I did a little bit of testing on the RWD cars that are eligible for the latest and greatest of the FTCC races. All cars were tested with all drivetrain upgrades, Race brakes, weight red,clutch,susp,tranny,roll cage and fully adjustable aerodynamics(I leave anything out?). The tires were either street or sport compound(i believe camaro was only car tested on street) and all cars were tested at a 600PI. I chose two tracks with different characteristics, the results are as follows;
2004 Mazdaspeed Rx-8

Handling balance: moderate understeer Stability: Good America lap 2:10.434 Laguna lap 1:28.254
2002 Chevrolet Camaro SS

A few notes about the stability rating;
Pathetic: You will need the reflexes of a superhero to keep this car firmly planted to the line you intend to follow, the car will tend to go from understeer to snap oversteer and the drop of a hat and grip loss is immediate.
Poor: Not quite as bad as pathetic, however the same traits are present. Grip loss is slightly more progressive and the car requires extremely smooth inputs to drive fast.
Average: The middle of the road in terms of stability, without smooth input the car will tend to exit the turns with the rear hanging out. It is manageable but doesnt inspire confidence.
Good: The car will inspire confidence and will allow for easier corner exiting. You will be able to be more aggressive with throttle inputs and grip loss comes after "floaty" but easily manageable oversteer.
Excellent: You will be able too throw the car around without adverse affects, grip loss is progressive and easily manageable.
Infallible: The car will be nigh impossible to lose traction with, short of collision or curb hopping. The grass will feel like a paved surface and you will be able to floor the gas crank the steering on corner exit without oversteer.
